to the Bumper Plant.
The department has been slowly relocating since July Shutdown –
all while meeting the demands of daily production.

In order to free up space for the Weld Line 2 expansion, the Forming/
Plastics Instrument Panel production area needed to move. The area,
previously located in the middle of MAP between Weld, Assembly
and Stamping, has about 45 associates. It includes an injection
mold machine, a vacuum forming press line, three ultra sonic knife
machines, four vibration welders, three ovens and four conveyors.
Moving that much equipment is no small task. Imagine massive lifts
rolling through MAP on the weekends to deliver the equipment to its
new home in the InMold building. There were some flat bed trucks
involved too.

It took three weeks to move the 3300 ton injection mold machine.
Then the machine had to be recertified once it was back up and run-
ning. But what is impressive is that move was only half of the six
weeks it took to originally set up. MAP Plastics associate Dan
Lininger unloads the instrument
panel trimming machine.
In order to hold the Plastics department the InMold building was
expanded to add 4600 square feet.

“In the past, Forming Plastics was divided with Bumper in the back
and IP in the center,” said Rob Howells, one of the project leaders.
“The consolidation gives us the benefit of having the entire team
together.”

It’s a better efficient flow all the way around, and it allows for a
faster response from the Equipment Service and Engineering groups.
Now they don’t have to transport tooling through the entire plant to
respond to a modification or maintenance need.

In addition, associates are now able to park in the north lot and have
a shorter walk. W
