I t was Friday, October 30, 2015. For many associates, antici-

pation of Friday night football and Beggar’s Night in local
communities gave needed incentive to end the workweek
on an upbeat note.

James “Jamie” Beal, a production associate in assembly at the
Marysville Auto Plant (MAP) celebrated his 27th anniversary with Honda
of America Mfg. (HAM) earlier in the month. Like many preceding,
Beal completed his morning workout ritual of stretching exercises and
300 crunches, downed a nutritious breakfast and headed to work.
Admittedly, he wasn’t quite feeling his best when he left home
that morning. In fact, Beal took “paid time off” Wednesday to rest
after experiencing tightness in his chest and shortness of breath.
Thinking it was no more than a sinus infection or perhaps a touch of
bronchitis, he spent 40 minutes on the elliptical Thursday after work.
Though his symptoms persisted, for all intents and purposes, it was
a typical start to the last day of the workweek.
After the morning team meeting, everyone disassembled and headed
to their respective first quarter assignment. It was approximately
7:00 a.m., Honda Accords were on Line 2 and Beal was working
on the lower cover installation. All of a sudden, his body felt like it
had just run a sprint. He had difficulty catching his breath and called
out to Stephanie Hardin who immediately reached out to Assembly
Coordinator Kim Neal and arranged for Beal to go to MAP Medical.
Once there, Beal recalled teasing the staff as they applied small
metal disks called electrodes to his chest to perform an electrocar-
diogram or EKG, a test that monitors electrical activity in the heart
to identify potential abnormalities. Then, he said “the lights just
went out.” When they came back on, it was Sunday evening and he
found himself in a hospital bed at The Ohio State University (OSU)
Medical Center in Columbus.
Beal assessed his unfamiliar surroundings and surmised what had
happened….he had suffered a heart attack. Though unconscious,
he vaguely recalled his wife, Anne, talking to him when awaiting a
medical care flight to transport him from Memorial Hospital of Union

arrival at OSU.
